Honestly, sort of gloomy。 Pretty, and important, but I'm not sure who the reader is。 Maybe for an OB/GYN waiting room。。。? Honestly, sort of gloomy。 Pretty, and important, but I'm not sure who the reader is。 Maybe for an OB/GYN waiting room。。。? 。。。more

Not a conventional picture book, Mama began as a series of illustrations of motherhood in different cultures and then the words were added。 It's almost a book of poetry。 The illustrations are gorgeous and each one begs to be studied。 The accompanying text is not all sunshine and roses about the joys of motherhood or the sacredness of a mother or any of the expected narratives。 Includes concepts of death of a child, changing a life plan based on a pregnancy, abandonment, regret, and other mature Not a conventional picture book, Mama began as a series of illustrations of motherhood in different cultures and then the words were added。 It's almost a book of poetry。 The illustrations are gorgeous and each one begs to be studied。 The accompanying text is not all sunshine and roses about the joys of motherhood or the sacredness of a mother or any of the expected narratives。 Includes concepts of death of a child, changing a life plan based on a pregnancy, abandonment, regret, and other mature scenarios。 Recommended: Ages 9 to adult 。。。more

I received an electronic ARC from Floris Books through Edelweiss+。Tender and beautifully illustrated book to encourage mothers。 Delforge takes readers on a trip through all the emotions and activities of motherhood。 Moms everywhere will connect with her words and rhythms as they move through their lives。 Greban's illustrations capture the exhaustion, worry and love involved in this special bond between a mother and her child。 A beautiful gift book for new mothers。 I received an electronic ARC from Floris Books through Edelweiss+。Tender and beautifully illustrated book to encourage mothers。 Delforge takes readers on a trip through all the emotions and activities of motherhood。 Moms everywhere will connect with her words and rhythms as they move through their lives。 Greban's illustrations capture the exhaustion, worry and love involved in this special bond between a mother and her child。 A beautiful gift book for new mothers。 。。。more

Hmmm。。。 A book that looks for all intents and purposes as if it's for children, about mother/child relationships, but one I can see the adult appreciating a lot more, making this a kind of gift-to-yourself book, if anything。 Opposite a full-colour artwork of a mother and child in a different situation each time, we get a sparse-feeling verse, a blank poem about a specific maternal aspect – the child vocalising 'mama' in all its variations, the gratitude of a mother, the breastfeeding, the caring Hmmm。。。 A book that looks for all intents and purposes as if it's for children, about mother/child relationships, but one I can see the adult appreciating a lot more, making this a kind of gift-to-yourself book, if anything。 Opposite a full-colour artwork of a mother and child in a different situation each time, we get a sparse-feeling verse, a blank poem about a specific maternal aspect – the child vocalising 'mama' in all its variations, the gratitude of a mother, the breastfeeding, the caring, guarding aspect of being a parent, and so on。 Indeed the range of mothers here is quite eye-opening, from the one bogged down with twins to the one going off to being in military service, to the one not too concerned the other parent has left her holding baby。 Very positive all round, but I can't be too positive until I can be sure who would actually want to buy and keep such a volume – children won't。 。。。more

I received a digital ARC c/o Edelweiss and thought the artwork in this book was completely stunning。 It depicts motherhood across cultures and history, with each illustration accompanied by text reflecting a mother's thoughts to her child。 I imagine this would be an enjoyable book to add to any parents' collection。 I received a digital ARC c/o Edelweiss and thought the artwork in this book was completely stunning。 It depicts motherhood across cultures and history, with each illustration accompanied by text reflecting a mother's thoughts to her child。 I imagine this would be an enjoyable book to add to any parents' collection。 。。。more

Originally published in French, the sentiments and illustrations in this oversize book easily translate into several different languages。 That isn't because of the simplicity of the text, which is powerful, intimate, moving, and eloquent, capturing effectively the various feelings mothers have for their offspring, but because the sentiments are so relatable and timeless。 In the lines, mothers ponder their own futures as well as their children, worry about their health, spend time guiding them in Originally published in French, the sentiments and illustrations in this oversize book easily translate into several different languages。 That isn't because of the simplicity of the text, which is powerful, intimate, moving, and eloquent, capturing effectively the various feelings mothers have for their offspring, but because the sentiments are so relatable and timeless。 In the lines, mothers ponder their own futures as well as their children, worry about their health, spend time guiding them in the right directions, and offer as many kisses as are requested, even a hundred or more, to reassure the little ones of love。 The striking images, full-page paintings featuring mothers from around the world, offer different perspectives of motherhood and focus on a mother's eyes, her feet, her tattooed back, her watchful eyes in the rearview mirror of a car, always careful, always on guard against the world that might do harm to her precious one, and in one case, mourning a loss and pondering if a death means that one is no longer a mother。 Gorgeous, glorious illustrations worthy of framing in a museum are accompanied by carefully-chosen words。 。。。more
